Eh I feel pretty indifferent about the guy really. However I don't think the death penalty accomplishes much. For one, its not administered fairly, consistently, or quickly. The only case where that is not true is in the case of cop killers, who invariably get executed. So as a deterrent to crime I don't really see much use in it. Now if everyone who committed murder got executed then maybe it'd be a more effective deterrent.
Personally I think the death penalty is trying to solve crime at the wrong end of the stick, when the death, violence, and suffering has already occurred. I'd much rather see more effort being put into preventing crime in the first place. Right now our penal system puts little effort into reforming criminals so what happens? They go to jail, get tougher, meaner, and more deranged, then they go back into to public so they can be a repeat offender. Then there's the whole dilapidated state of inner city school systems and the overwhelmed police force. I say spend more time attacking the cause instead of punishing the aftermath.
Yet we kid ourselves into believing that somehow if we keep doing what we're doing things will get better. Maybe they are slowly, but I think we can do better than we're doing now, and the death penalty has little to do with it
In Tookie's case I can't say either way. On one hand violence begets violence and taking someone's life in order to punish him for taking life won't achieve much. After all, he's not gonna learn, he'll be dead. Nor will it bring anybody back from the dead.
But, if you have a death penalty for a given crime, then it should be enforced. Gotta be consistent if you believe in capital punishment. He knew what he was doing when he did it, and even though he has done much to try to repent for his sins, nothing will bring those he killed back.
