The inner is what separates. It's essentially held on just by the boot clamp.

But if the inner is hanging down, there's no load on it and it cant separate Smile

When I was swapping engines, I didn't lay in on the ground cause it kept getting in my way so it was laying on the front cross member with the inner joint hanging slightly off. Slightly off became completely off sometime during the night. It's not a big deal cause you get a chance to rebuild, clean, repack the joint but it's another hassle that you might not want.

There's a reason why cyl 3 is so clean... it's not working.

Looks like the crank pulley that came off of my Z. It was working fine at the time, don't know how long it had been like that though - I guess since the crank pulley removal...

So what exactly blew up? All the cyls look to be in the same orientation/direction (i.e. you dont have one piston cocked 45 deg and out of sync).

Looks like the head gasket let go?

Let me know if you need any parts or a hand to tear down the engine.

i get a little feeling of dread every time i see Jay's old car up on blocks with no wheels

nice progress, and yeah what the heck happened? Jay put it through it's paces in it's former life and it took it like a champ.

cyl 3 had no compression. i think the ring gave out.
