And it's cooler than a Trek.

A real fitting is important, and the labor and parts thing is nice, too.

I would expect the discount to be around 10%, but I've got no real idea Smile

such a label whore.

haha... well... i don't know that i necessarily need ultegra anything, but otherwise, the bike looks good. I wish people still carried lemonds. I think those are some very stylish looking bikes.

I <3 Trek

Apparently yours is rather durable

- .RJ - 07-09-2008

What would a 'better' set of chainrings/cassette and shifter thingeradoos cost me?

- Ginger0 - 07-09-2008

You want all that driveline stuff replaced? Not cheap Smile

Do you have 8 or 9 gears on your cassette in the back?

- .RJ - 07-09-2008

I think its 10

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/20 ... t/pilot21/

Define 'not cheap'. We talking about 'buy another bike' not cheap? I want to keep the bike...

- Ginger0 - 07-09-2008

Oh, your road bike, I assumed you meant your mountain bike since it's the durable one Wink

Your Pilot's a 2007 model, isn't it? If memory serves, 105 didn't get 10 in the back until 2008. Either way... Depending on the niceness (which you're probably going to want, since that's really the only direction you can go right now), at least $400 for a new crankset, and front/rear deraileurs, chainrings, chain, and cassette... might as well move to a double while you're at it.

- .RJ - 07-09-2008

I can deal with $400. Maybe this winter. I have all the stuff for a double sitting around too... i'm just lazy.

Components on the MTB are great, I wouldnt want anything else.

- Evan - 07-09-2008

what kind of crank do you have on your 8000 RJ? Mine came with a 'ICON' or something and Im pretty sure it was made out of butter as I bent it in about a month.
I Put a XT crank on it and I havent been able to scratch it (well, back when I rode it anyway)

How often you wreck, you may want to replace yours with something better :p

- .RJ - 07-09-2008

I think its the ICON too. Maybe its bent, I dunno? The thing works pretty good and doesnt break when I crash it so I really dont want to fuck with it.

- Ginger0 - 07-09-2008

He was talking about his road bike, which has proven to be a little less than solid.

- ViPER1313 - 07-09-2008

I don't know much about the cycling world (all this brand name talk might as well be Greek), but when did it become necessary to spend 1g on a bicycle? I mean, these are the same machines that I used to ride every day between the ages of 8 and 16 (my car put an end to that)? I don't think I ever broke a pedal, bent a handlebar or had a gear selector not select a gear on any of the bikes I owned, and I rode the piss out of them. What does the extra $700-800 buy you (a motor maybe)?

ViPER1313 Wrote:I rode the piss out of them.

No you didn't.

ViPER1313 Wrote:What does the extra $700-800 buy you (a motor maybe)?

The ability to ride the piss out of it.

For a mountain bike, if you spend less than ~450, it's a steaming pile.
For a road bike, if you spend less than ~750, it's a steaming pile.

I had a $150 mountain bike for college. That shit couldn't hit a gear properly... EVER. That's why I'm a bit nervous about any indexed shifters. Other than that, I have no idea why the shit costs so much. High quality materials? Lots of crazy research? That old mtb was a slow pig that I beat the shit out of and ended up donating after a year. My nice 80s road bike is still doing ok. I've ridden it hard for 3 years and it just needs a new bottom bracket. Basically, all I know is that you can feel the difference between a $700 road bike and one that costs $1400. Also, this doesn't answer why they're so much money, but I can justify a nice bike by comparing cost of ownership to my car.

Car was over $4k/year to have. Insurance + gas + maintenance (basics like tire and oil).
A bike costing me $1400 will pay for itself in a couple months. Plus, I feel healthier, and don't have to worry about maintenance (the shop does it for free).

- Ginger0 - 07-09-2008

Just because you bought a cheap bike as a kid, doesn't mean all bicycles were cheap.

Adam didn't "ride the piss" out of his bikes. I got stress fractures from wrapping my feet around the pedals when I was racing. And I wasn't the fastest guy I knew by a long shot.

Bicycles to be REALLY used have always cost a lot. Saying you don't get expensive bicycles is like a Taurus or Escort owner trying to say there's no reason for Porsches and Ferraris.

You should've saved just a little bit of money you spent on riding and bought milk.

I only started exlusively drinking high fructose corn syrup, and eating preservatives straight out of the frozen pizza cardboard box when I moved out on my own. I lived with mommy then, and she made me eat less suck.
