I really don't understand people that complain about any companies profits. As long as individual usage has the ability to be elastic and companies aren't breaking the law, what's the problem? This is capitalism after all. Just buy their stock and go along for the ride.

Actually, the margin is closer to 3-5% - one of the lowest industry yield percentages on the market. But with more demand, sure, the net profit will be higher. Everyone also seems to have short memory as during the 80s and 90s, the oil industry struggled and posted significant losses...

Last I checked, the political left believes that companies shouldn't make profits. Especially those evil oil companies that conspired to drive up oil prices and even worse, housing prices in metropolitan areas so that you were forced to live 60 miles from work. Don't forget they also conspired with car companies to force you to buy 8 seater 10mpg SUVs to take your one child to soccer practice.

Also guilty of this (according to most nerd sites) is Apple, who has higher profit margins than Dell, so they're evil as hell.

Actually, I'd love to blame the political left, but I'm pretty sure it's just the self-entitled holier than thou cosmopolitan people that believe this (who tend to vote left, i'm sure they're related, just not that one causes the other).

While I agree they're part of the population, I'd also add the lower income middle-America that doesn't know enough about economics to understand supply/demand. Those folk tend to vote Republican so there are people on both sides of the fence.

No child left behind without an ifone.

ViPER1313 Wrote:Boo-hoo to them and the extra taxes they might have to pay.

You know that we tried this ~25 years ago right, with extra taxes against the oil companies? Know what happened?

Wait for it.......

Gas prices went up.

Should we try it again? Even with hope and change, the results will be the same.

people here are going "full retard" right now...its getting to be like when katrina hit. panicking, rumors, rumors of rumors, hoarding, etc.

i have a half tank and the X has a half so i'm not worried but damn....apparently some people are waiting 2 hours for gas and most places only have 87.

- CaptainHenreh - 09-23-2008

Just a little tidbit for everyone's information, there's no such thing as "running out of 89".

If any gas station ever tells you they are out of 89, they're full of shit, as 89 is just a blend of 87 and the high octane (either 91 or 93).

Nevermind that 89 is the most worthless gasoline octane rating *ever*, every gas station has two tanks: one for 87, one for 93, and the 89 comes from a little bit of each. (half and half if the high octane stuff is 91)

 ATL sucks. Jess was pointing some article out to me yesterday from AJC, one of the quotes was some dumb woman that drove around all afternoon, by 4 or 5 stations that were out of gas, finally found one that had gas. But it was $5/gal! Oh noes! So she got just enough to keep driving around and look for a better price. After a half hour wait at another station, she was finally done.

Not true. I've worked at a family owned BP station for 7 years. We have 4 separate tanks. 1 for diesel and one for each "grade" of gas. AFAIK, all BP's are like that

Well, I've worked at 3 gas stations, and all three of them had either 2, 3, or 4 tanks:

1 for "Regular"
1 for "Premium"
1 for "Kerosene"
1 for "Diesel"

So allow me to amend my statement:

"Most (I'd say at least 90%) of the time 89 is just a blend of 87 and premium."

- mrbaggio - 09-23-2008

and why is that blend "worthless"?

- CaptainHenreh - 09-23-2008

mrbaggio Wrote:and why is that blend "worthless"?

Oh, that's just my opinion, really.

If your car's powerplant can take advantage of a higher octane fuel, then you should use the highest octane available, so as to get the best benefit. If you can't take advantage of it, then 87 works just fine.

So what's 89 for?

BLINGMW Wrote:Jess was pointing some article out to me yesterday from AJC, one of the quotes was some dumb woman

ha, i read the same one (i was actually looking for a picture of the lines at the pump to go with my post) and i actually had to stop and comprehend what this idiot was doing. i almost felt like my intelligence was insulted for reading it.

looks like the best way to weather a gas crisis is to keep endlessly driving from one station until the next so you don't run out of gas! until you do! wait, what?

- BLINGMW - 09-23-2008

CaptainHenreh Wrote:So what's 89 for?

I dunno, but it's what I use in my van, the bimmer, the mini, and my bike

van says 87 is ok but 91 is recommended for heavy use. When I do drive it, I haul a bike or other heavy things and drive it hard, so I averaged it. 89.

bimmer and mini recommend 91, and sometimes they get it if I'm feeling generous, but I haven't seen a difference in fuel economy using 89, they're not boosted or super high compression, and have knock sensors if I'm wrong, so 89.

bike says 87, but igition is advanced from stock, I drive it hard, and it gets super hot, so to hedge my bets, 89.

:dunno:

Well, basically every gas station in the entire Charlotte area is out of gas, including those across the border in SC. So I have to go searching tonight for a station in SC somewhere or I have to cancel an appointment I have tomorrow. WTF?

srsly? I call BS.

Man I would love for this area to run out of gas.

- WRXtranceformed - 09-24-2008

No joke, pretty much every station within like a 20 mile radius of downtown is out of gas. It's all over the radio and everything ha! I'll roll out late tonight and see if the supply trucks have come in yet I guess.

- Feersty - 09-25-2008

Dang that sucks. The price of gas is dropping in San Antonio.

ATL does suck, and so do motorcycles on I-85 South who break off your sideview mirror, turnaround and wave and then keep going. Ask Scotty.

Feersty Wrote:motorcycles on I-85 South who break off your sideview mirror, turnaround and wave and then keep going

Did you cut them off or something?

I've rearranged mirrors before...

- WRXtranceformed - 09-25-2008

People were waiting in lines at midnight tonight for the gas trucks to show up.......

I guess I get to go sit in a gas line for an hour or two. Awesome.
