I dont see why either of those things are necessary.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 07-25-2013

They arent......but its a way for me to justify upgrading my TV

Sidebar....

Does Refresh rate still matter? On LCD TVs 240hz is best right? What about on LED? What refresh rate do i need to keep 1080p from being jumpy?

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 07-25-2013

Not really. It was a marketing gimmick. Even at 60hz 1080p was never jumpy (considering the framerate on any movie is 30fps and was originally 24fps)

I havent kept up with TVs in a few years, but I really like locally dimming LED backlight, but that may have been phased out since it makes the TV a bit thicker than sidelit LED and people are stupid.

I only ever use my laptop and I ran the HDMI around the outside of the room in the cable channel that holds my surround-sound speaker wire. It's waaaaay perfect.

I should probably upgrade my receiver before my TV....

Learn me some Receivers. What brands should I avoid?

Can I get by with a $250 receiver?

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 07-25-2013

its pointless to get a new receiver if you dont have higher quality speakers to take advantage of it

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 07-25-2013

I have what I think are decent speakers, I am no audiophile. I know there is alot of BOSE hate but they were Free 99, I have the 161s and 201s.

I think my biggest benefit from a new receiver would be the HDMI inputs.

Here you go bitches:

Play local files through your Chromecast.
Quote:We’re still playing around with the Chromecast, and will have some thoughts on it later, but we wanted to point out a feature that you may not have been aware of after watching yesterday’s demo from Google. Chromecast can play local video files from your computer to a TV. That means you aren’t stuck with YouTube or Netflix or uploading your current collection to a cloud service – you can grab files already on your computer and then stream them to a TV.

Outside of owning a Chromecast device (which is sold out everywhere), all you have to do is install the Chromecast extension on your PC, then find the file path of a local video file that you’d like to play, paste that path into the address bar in a Chrome browser, and then press the Chromecast button to cast it on over. It really is that simple.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 07-26-2013

So amazon said it will send the code out within a week of shipment. We shall see. I ordered mine shortly after Amazon went live selling it so I hope I get a code.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - .RJ - 07-26-2013

I am catching up on internet backlog, and I cant figure out what the the point of this thing is, but that's probably because I have a media PC for my TV.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 07-26-2013

So it works as advertised. But the way my a/v is ghetto rigged I have no way of playing the audio

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 07-26-2013

Is it bad that neither our receiver nor our main TV has any HDMI inputs. Not a single TV in the house does. Of course I think all the ones in the apartment do.

Guess it's gonna cost more than $35? Tongue

Can you just not plug it into the actual receiver itself as an HDMI channel?

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 07-29-2013

My receiver is so old it has no hdmi inputs....not even the green/blue plugs. Just RCA.
