Am I doing it wrong? yes, replacing core OS functionality with free apps that just as well could be a 15 year olds class project is a bad idea. IF you want to replace something like the messaging app , then at least buy something from a real software company (ie, swype). personally i dont feel the need to mess with that, core funtionality of any recent android version does everything very very well. roms are a different ballgame (if that phone has any roms), you should stick to something well supported like cyanogenmod, and realize that youre then responsible for flashing your own updates youre on a 2 year old midrange device that was never well regarded to begin with, running a 3.5 year old version of the OS. I would temper your expectations. if youre unhappy with it, a nexus 4 (or 5) should be in your near future. i used to be as big of an android hater as there was, but recent versions combined with newer hardware is much better than the competition Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 10-01-2013 anyone want to sell me their old sprint android phone for dirrrrty cheap? Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Ken - 10-01-2013 I have an old Evo, has dust in the screen though. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 10-01-2013 I would Evan but I'm using mine as an MP3 player haha Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 10-01-2013 Mike Wrote:Android still receives a "terrible" review. Like... absolute shit. Evan Wrote:youre on a 2 year old midrange device that was never well regarded to begin with, running a 3.5 year old version of the OS. I would temper your expectations. Ok, got it, it sucks. And no-one even makes a candybar style phone anymore. I guess I'll go back to blackberry!?!? :dunno: Thinking back to its flaws... I think it was better. At least it just crashed and restarted when it had a problem, it didn't just silently lose functions, nor give me any false hope of it ever doing anything it cannot already do. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 10-01-2013 Don't go back to Blackberry Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 10-02-2013 Mike Wrote:So many dimwits filled in their Apple IDs and passwords into an app that likely stored/sent it away for malicious use. But I do need to try rooting one of these, might as well start somewhere. Then at least I could get some of the factory installed apps off that are eating up most of the very limited storage space. But, I'm sure the keyboard won't work right or some other thing once I'm done. I'll get around to it. *edit* lol, just as I hit send, I feel my pocket vibrating non-stop. Oh hey, that's the simple, well rated app that just reminds you of a missed call or txt! Should be easy. *SHOULD* be part of the OS.... of course, instead of vibrating two short bursts this time, it is stuck ON. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Jake - 10-02-2013 So I was using SwiftKey on my work S3... free trial that then wants me to pay $4 to keep it. Eh, work phone means I don't care to pay for apps on it. Discovered Google Keyboard, the stock one from the Nexus devices, is $Free on the Play Store. Does the predictive thing really well and supports a swype-like input too. I may like it more than SwiftKey. I've always thought the iPhone did predictive typing very, very well, and Google Keyboard is absolutely nailing it as well. Makes the phone feel brand new. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 10-02-2013 Swype is legit! Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 10-31-2013 Nexus 5 is out. http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/31/5049 ... arting-349 https://play.google.com/store/devices/d ... black_16gb Not that I didnt see it coming with all the leaks, but I have to say Im a little dissapointed. small battery, midrange camera, plastic build. The small battery is particularly painful. It really isnt a flagship phone anymore, its a midrange to high midrange phone. Its still what I would call a solid deal, but not a killer deal like the Nexus 4 was. I ordered one because I want LTE, and Im kind of hooked on Nexus devices since im off contract and I dont want to pay $650 for an unlocked phone. But...buying a used LG G2 for about the same price is verrrry tempting. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - CaptainHenreh - 10-31-2013 Let me know what you think of it. I went with a GS4 for Sprint, and I like it alright but some of the samsung bloatware is a little ::dunno::. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Ken - 11-01-2013 Got my Kindle Fire HDX last week. Absolutely love this thing. Went with the 7" WiFi only model. Keep in mind my only real experience, other than occasionally using my girlfriend's iPad 2/3 (whatever the previous version to the just released one is, their naming structure now confuses me), was the HP TouchPad I had that I installed Android on. Anyway, screen is amazing, love the weight and feel of the device. Light enough for me not to mind carrying it around and easy for me to write out quick e-mails. The speakers are awesome, especially when considering their size, and the WiFi has great range. The 2.2GHz processor is pretty snappy, haven't had any hiccups there. I am able to play FIFA 14' (for free in the Amazon store, not sure if it is in Google Play) without any lag whatsoever, and relatively little drain on the battery, so the GPU is serving pretty well too. As I just indicated, battery life has been pretty sweet too, I'm getting about two days out of it with a several hours of gaming and streaming videos thrown in there. Another cool benefit was that I forgot I had the Amazon App store on my old Evo, so I could sync all those apps up to the Kindle. Best one was the OfficeSuite I downloaded for free ($8-$15 normally) so that was cool. Other than that the native e-mail app has a great interface, kind of reminds me of the HP's (not the android boot). Overall really happy with it, and great bang for the buck for $229. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - SlimKlim - 11-01-2013 The 4 was the most recent iPad, the one with the retina screen and "lightning" connector. I have been rolling in fanboism for the past week with my new 5S. Ridiculously fast, perfect size, the "TouchID" thing is pretty neat, the new parallax effects of iOS7 work really well with the new device, and the battery life is out of this world. I don't charge it overnight anymore. ~20 minutes in the car twice a day is enough to keep it between 70-100% for the rest of the day and night. I'm starting to think about a replacement for my iPad 2, it's starting to run a bit slow and one edge of the screen is a little messed up because I got it wet last summer. I might go for the new iPad and get a nice keyboard case so it's a little more convenient for emailing and foruming, but I'm also intrigued by the Surface 2. I want something that I could use as a tablet, but also sit on the couch with a keyboard. The Surface looks like it would only really work on a table. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Ken - 11-01-2013 SlimKlim Wrote:The 4 was the most recent iPad, the one with the retina screen and "lightning" connector. I use my brother's surface pretty easily on my lap, plus the new one improved the kickstand a bit. Try it out in store and see what you think. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - SlimKlim - 11-01-2013 Yeah I gotta shop around, probably going to wait a couple months and get myself something as a christmas present anyway. Between fixing the BMW, buying a new wardrobe for this business casual job, my phone contract running out and property taxes being due I've spent a nauseating amount of money over the past two months. Life sucks. I want to go back to when our biggest concern was how we'd split the case of Rolling Rock and who's buying the obscene amount of bacon and eggs this week. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 11-01-2013 SlimKlim Wrote:The 4 was the most recent iPad, the one with the retina screen and "lightning" connector. Lenovo Yoga is a pretty amazing multi-use touchscreen device, but thats pushing the budget into another league. The surface 2 has a normal 'hard' keyboard that should work in a lap. The new Asus Transformer (TF701 IIRC?) might be something to check out too. There is a microsoft store in tysons where they have this stuff to play with. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 11-13-2013 CaptainHenreh Wrote:Let me know what you think of it.sooooo...... Got the Nexus 5 last tuesday but its not off to a good start. The audio doesnt work. No phone ringers, no alarms, no notifications, no game audio, etc etc. A couple of really long threads on various forums so its not a rare occurrence. Unfortunately, just as Google's products tend to be in beta for a very long time, Google's support most definitely is. Took over a week of very slow back and forth just to get Google to say "ok we will send you a new one. but you have to get at the end of the line of all the other play store orders" So I ordered my phone 11 minutes after it went on sale on oct 31, paid for 2 day shipping, and I might get a fully functional phone sometime in december  anyway, Ive been using it just in vibrate mode and I can say the phone is good but not great. Its a upper-midrange phone IMO. If you care about these things, then you've probably read other blog reviews and I dont disagree terribly with anything they have said. Camera is good but not great, battery life is decent even with Google (Privacy Invade) NOW, and better than I expected (better than Nexus 4) build quality and "looks" is better than pictures, but not as good as the nexus 4 IMO. CPU is blazing fast and snappy but so was the one in the nexus 4. The screen is really good and sharp. Havent found any Android 4.4 bugs so far so they fixed the bluetooth and wireless charging bugs that have annoyed the shit out of me since 4.2. Otherwise, improvements in 4.4 are pretty subtle. Honestly I dont think its any better than an S4. S4 has a bigger battery, slightly better camera, and is a touch smaller/thinner with the same size screen. Software side, of course is a different story and according to personal taste. I havent had enough time with TouchJizz to fully evaluate it. |
