Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 12-18-2014 point is paypal exists and is exactly what you described versus facebook payment which does not, (and do you really shop at an oil company website?) homedepot takes paypal not just online but in-person too which is pretty awesome. and in my online shopping now if there isnt paypal or amazon payments then I dont buy there. I used to get temporary card #s but thats kind of a pain. i really just hope some standard catches on, and one that isnt walled garden proprietary apple pay bullshit. paypal looks like the best option right now, but amazon has the scale to push out to retail payments if they want to also. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 12-18-2014 Evan Wrote:point is paypal exists and is exactly what you described versus facebook payment which does not, (and do you really shop at an oil company website?) We pay for our oil, in installments, on their website. I have to enter my cc# every time. Standards are my point. It doesn't matter if Paypal exists if the site I use doesn't support it. I just want everyone to agree and make it happen. That sounds supremely limiting. Samsung is working on one. Will use the same NFC readers in the same way as Apple Pay. Ive been able to pay (and anyone with android phone) with my phone using google wallet at CVS for a couple years. Carriers have had SIM based (more secure) payment systems for a while too. Apple is actually pretty late to this. google wallet for online payments never really caught on, i think they may have even shut it down as a outside service I want something that spans both in person AND online transactions, does so seamlessly, and abstracts away credit card numbers. Paypal and Amazon payments seem to be the closest. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 12-19-2014 I'm moving on Tuesday and decided in going to buy my own router instead of renting one from verizon. Best router for $100? Best router for $100? Go Spend more than $100 and you'll be much happier with results. EDIT: Clicked reply too soon. My friend has the AC1900 NightHawk and has had zero problems for over a year now. Me personally, I want to get the Asus RT-AC68U. Me personally, I want to get the Asus RT-AC68U.I have both and they are both great routers and have been the top 2 routers on smallnetbuilder for a while. (aside from the brand new crop of $300 routers) Most router problems, dropping wifi connections, range issues are from cheaping out on the router. The Netgear R7000 Nighthawk is my primary, and it sits in my basement behind a bunch of crap. Even on the 3rd floor on the opposite end of the house I have great signal and can still top out my fios 50mbit connection. The extra stuff like VPN,media server and nas/cloud storage (with free dyndns account) is a big benefit if you use it too, but if you have to use it in AP mode because you have to put it behind a required ISPs router (like fios) then you cant use them. Best router for $100? Go If you're going the DD-WRT route there are definitely better units to start with. That's a whole different type of discussion. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 12-19-2014 I don't need anything fancy and I didn't want anything complicated. I bought this per Rex's recommendation and reviews. Seems like a solid unit for the price. http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Wi-Fi-Gig ... 9001144159 Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-19-2014 won't you still need the Fios router? I dunno about anybody else, but my fios is fed into the router via COAX? Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Ken - 12-19-2014 JustinG Wrote:won't you still need the Fios router? I dunno about anybody else, but my fios is fed into the router via COAX? It's actually a combined unit of Modem/Router/AP. So yes, you would still have the Modem/Router portion but you can turn off the AP function. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 12-19-2014 JustinG Wrote:won't you still need the Fios router? I dunno about anybody else, but my fios is fed into the router via COAX?if you use fios for internet only no tv you can run cat5 from the ONT and completely cut out the fios router. if you do have fiostv you can still use your router as the primary via cat5, and use the fios router behind it just to run the tv boxes but you lose on demand tv. I did this at my old house because I had the shitty silver/black fios router that chokes. new house they gave me the new red/black fios router that is much better, so its fine to use it as the primary router and set your router behind it. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-19-2014 hrmmmm, I have internets only. Interesting. I have a WDNR 4000 and the Red/black fios router. Worth the switch? Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 12-19-2014 The red/black is actually a pretty good router. If its easy for you to run cat5 from the ONT (which is usually outside) to your router or want to do more advanced stuff like VPN or firewall that the fios router gets in the way of, then go for it. If not, probably not worth the hassle. everythign you would ever want to know is on dslreports http://www.dslreports.com/faq/16077 Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 12-19-2014 I bought this one to try and avoid paying the rental fee on the verizon router. I guess that isn't going to work? Edit: Yeah based on this it doesn't seem like I can use my own router (easily) with internet and tv. Would be easier if I just had fios internet. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/14077 Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Evan - 12-19-2014 i think it can be done but you need a coax to ethernet (MOCA) bridge too. easiest way to avoid rental fee is to just buy a red/black actiontec off ebay. how i dont pay the rental fee: when signing up, i put "have my own equipement" on the signup form. tech comes to my house, gets a new red/black router from his truck and installs it, and it never shows up on my bill. i didnt do that on purpose (i had an old silver/black that was 'mine' that i planned to use) but i wont argue. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 12-19-2014 Yeah found the red/black for $79 http://www.bonusstore.us/p/Actiontec-Ve ... 01777.html Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 12-22-2014 Evan Wrote:Jake Wrote::dunno: not at all, and i buy TONS online.Evan Wrote:and in my online shopping now if there isnt paypal or amazon payments then I dont buy there. Add theater tickets to my list. It's becoming clear that goods are, for the most part, covered. Services, where I seem to spend more of my disposable income than I realized, are shit for payment options. |
