Wow I remember the Sasha / Digweed Northern Exposure shit... old school! Enervate is still a chill ass song.

AVB is a fantastic DJ to see live. I've seen him live at least 3 times and every time it's been an epic show. Corsten would also be an awesome show to see and I'm coming around on Tiesto. I think he's gotten out of his funk at this point. I've also seen some pretty good jungle / hard house DJs like Aphrodite / Dieselboy... but I think a good progressive trance / house DJ like Van Buuren would really be an awesome first show. He's so energetic and it's always such a happy atmosphere.

And no, I don't do happy drugs. Never have. It's one of those experiences that is so fun that you really can't put it into words though. One of my ex girlfriends HATED techno music... but I took her to AVB @ Love for her first show and she kept saying over and over how much fun it was and how happy she was to go. =D

If you guys want to set it up, I'd love to see Tiesto or AVB again in DC. Even if I have to work the next day heh (which is likely =p)

Sasha - Ibiza.... ahhh memories

We were in Vegas this past weekend and DJ Dan was at the Palms. I was tempted to go but in the end we ended up not and I kinda regret it.

Awesome, I knew you would love that song Scott... you were the person who first introduced me to Ronski Speed =D Remember that??

I'm really glad I located that song. I was able to remember some of the lyrics and googled it. I was afraid I'd never hear it again when the CD player wouldn't play the disc.

are you kidding? haha! i was listening to one of his shows just earlier today at work and i was thinking "how come Lee always finds the best stuff...i need to find stuff like this." i was totally convinced you got me into his music. my memory sucks

honestly...you could make a billion trance songs with nothing but a hot chick's voice, a solid beat and/or a piano and i'd probably buy every one, it's my biggest weakness. that's why so many of my favorite songs are stuff like this (BT, Motorcycle, etc)

He was supposed to play here last Friday, but was a no-show. Word on grapevine is that he's quite "sick" - so he probably didn't show there either.

- Apoc - 09-07-2007

I need some help... remember that song from like 10-15 years ago where there's a chick faking/having an orgasm in the middle of the song? We were talking about it this past weekend and I can't remember the freaking name. I actually had it on cassette, it's that old.

- Evan - 09-07-2007

lords of acid?

or the rob zombie song more human than human? that was orgasm in the beginning though

- Apoc - 09-07-2007

Neither of those. This was a progressive house type mix where the refrain was basically a chick building to orgasm. I'm thinking John will know exactly what I'm talking about.

- WRXtranceformed - 09-08-2007

Hah, there was an old ass DJ Micro song that was a remix of the Speedracer song where Speedracer and whoever that chick was in that show were having orgasms together. I don't think that's the one you're talking about. It was a pretty clever mix!

Yes, it was a Lil Louis & Josh Wink and the song was called French Kiss -So How is Your Evening So Far?. I have that record packed away in my little record collection in my parents basement. I should get rid of that before they do - LOL.

ScottyB Wrote:i second Kristina Sky. I remember Lee telling me how Kristina was talking to him and pointing out the way some super popular DJ (like Tiesto) was doing these sloppy transitions and she was actually right on.

I know I'm rekindling very old posts - but please allow a few comments from somebody who was a DJ snob for quite some time.

Yes, for the longest time, many big DJs were really sloppy - partially b/c they were so f'd up. Plus with really loud sound systems, you can get away with a lot just by turning up the bass and minimizing other aspects of the frequencies (that and the use of filters). From a technical standpoint, you aren't going to find any amazing DJs in the progressive scene, however, you will find them in the breaks, DnB, and hip-hop scene (scratching). But back to what we were talking about - there is a lot of technology out there that covers mistakes, and when I listen to sets, I can still pick up on the most minute errors they have, but I applaud DJs that still go for a long mix where you can still here them to a slight adjustment of the vinyl speed.

Now for the good ole' days - seeing Deep Dish, PVD, S&D, Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, etc go to town on 3-4 turntables consequetively - now that's talent. S&D and PVD used to overlay 1-2 additonal records all the time over their normal mixing (you can get a little flavor for this on Northern Exporsures, CD2 - the song "Deep Space" or whatever it was called).

Kristina is a good DJ, but she's not seamless and I still can pick up her errors as well. But she's pretty decent. Paul Oakenfold used to slam a lot of cross-faders in his mixing, but he's actually improved since I saw him back in ~2000. What's different about what Kristina plays is that she plays more anthems for the crowds - I miss the old sets where no-name white labels were dug up and made into epics just by how they were mixed and overlaid with other tracks (or two other tracks at a time).

I digress...

- ScottyB - 09-08-2007

John, you sincerely fascinate me with your knowledge. i had no idea you have that kind of background. i feel like such a newb...in 2000 i was just wrapping my head around this stuff. i think at that time i had just picked up oakenfold's "tranceport" album and thought it was the hottest shit ever.

i want to peg you with a bunch of questions but i'll try to be reasonable. can you offer any pointers for the best examples of the "white label" unknown/underground kind of songs that were spun into awesome tracks like you mentioned? i love those kinds of songs and have a hard time finding them simply because i don't know what/who to look for.

- John - 09-08-2007

Most initial pressings of songs get floated as a white label - for selected DJs to try out during sets. If you ever catch tracklistings by big name DJs, you'll find out a lot of times that many somes have no title or artist mentioned, or sometimes they'll have an artist and it'll simply say 'white label' on the record label notes. Sometimes you can get lucky at record stores (do those even exist anymore? LOL) and pick up white labels by really good producers - some of them being gems that never are really played anywhere. Some you just get before they hit a big label - I still have a few BT white labels before they made it to wherever they did...

More later - time for wine and a movie with the lady friend...

- WRXtranceformed - 09-08-2007

That's really good insight into what the scene used to be. PVD is still one of my favorite DJs after all the years I've listened to trance. His Global Underground best hits CD with the DVD extra is such a great album to listen to on road trips... especially if you have an in dash DVD player like my younger brother does.

I'm no expert at electronic music, but more of an enthusiast. I agree with you also John that from a technical standpoint, the harder-hitting EDMs tend to create some of the most talented DJs. LTJ Bukem, Aphrodite, Sasha & Digweed (I still have that Northern Exposures album around somewhere heh)...shit, I even saw a smaller set of D&B DJs come into JMU when I was a freshman called Ming & FS who did some of the most unbelievable beatboxing I'd ever heard. I'm talking like rivalling Rhazel; beatboxing hip hop is one thing, but beatboxing drum and bass is ridiculous!

I think what draws me to KSky's stuff is her incredible use of vocals, transitions, and energy that invades your head when you listen to her music. Did you see that she's going to be releasing a vinyl on Armin Van Buuren's "A State of Trance" record label pretty soon?? I'm stoked she's doing so well... I really hope she gets a show solidified on the east coast (every one has fallen through so far) so that I can see her live and try to put a ring on her finger. *cough* er yeah...

That's it! I was discussing stripper songs with Luke/Creighton this past weekend and he said that was a good one. We then proceeded to toss out about a half dozen examples we each thought were good and debated going to a stripclub to play Stripper Song Bingo. I would have destroyed him.

All John's talk of white labels reminds me of the days of digging through the stacks at 12" records downtown. Ah... memories. I had to pull out the Sasha mix from Creamfields back in '98 to relive the past.

Back on topic... I want to add DJ Rap to my list of overrateds. I think chick DJs get far too much of a break when it comes to making good music because they have tits. Let's call it the Danica Patrick effect.

- WRXtranceformed - 09-08-2007

Sandra Collins is a good one to check out. I think she's still on the Perfecto label with Paul Oakenfold. Iio isn't bad either, some of the remixes of her song "In the End" are amazing. Great vocals and real laid back tracks.

LOL - that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. What's that guy up to these days?

Yep, same with Baby Anne. Even Jen Lasher to a certain effect... I remember hanging out with her when she was underage, and man she was hot. But then she started to sleep around with other DJs to work her way up the food chain...

They're vacationing in San Fran for two weeks. Two Wednesdays ago we both decided to meet up in Vegas this past Saturday. They'd never been and we don't need much of an excuse to go so we pulled some strings and went. We flew back Wednesday and now they're currently in Yosemite.

- Evan - 09-08-2007

Im intrigued how it can be in trance and electronic music in general, the actual artist who writes and records the song is relatively unknown, but the DJs who play the songs, maybe mix up the beat a bit, are the ones who get all the fame.
Of course, you have plenty of DJs now who do both, like all the big names, but its still a very interesting oddity about the electronic music scene.
