Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 08-24-2016 Thanks all for the phone recommendations a few months back. I almost pulled the trigger on the Nexus 5X, but no memory card slot?! :vomit: There's a lot to like there for $200, but that killed it, and it sounds like battery life and call quality are just *ok*. Just ordered a new Moto G (3rd gen) for $130. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Jake - 08-25-2016 After playing with several friends' phones, realizing I was up for an upgrade, and being fairly nonplussed with the direction Apple's been taking lately, I pulled the trigger last night on a Galaxy S7 Edge. I have no idea what I'm doing. Any suggestions on the best apps for texting, calendar, contacts/dialer? All of my mail/contacts/calendar was already on Google's services so it's been an easy transition, but the stock apps Samsung bundles aren't so hot. I downloaded Google Messenger for texts, but the concept of having two apps named Messenger bothers the shit out of me (Facebook Messenger being the other one). Maybe GoSMS or something? Also, any general Android tips/tricks would be great. I think this level of awkwardness is how our parents must feel with new technology. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - SlimKlim - 08-25-2016 It's like I don't even know who you are anymore. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - HAULN-SS - 08-25-2016 I have an S7 and its terrible. I hope you bought one without all the verizon shit and samsung shit all over it. The keyboards I have tried are flat out terrible. One pro-tip..hit the home button 3 times, and it will shrink the display field so you can actually use this phone with one hand. Never thought I would see Genius Bar Jake rockin' an android. I'm sure your return will be quick as all I hear about the Galaxy phones are how shitty they are. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Jake - 08-25-2016 I mean, when Apple's biggest selling point of iOS 10 is that the emojis are bigger, it's kind of hard to get excited about buying another phone from them. I haven't had a Mac in years and their extreme reluctance to update the lineup has me considering a Windows laptop to replace this ancient Dell sometime soon. I have a Fitbit Blaze, not an Apple Watch... and Android Wear looks ballin' if I wanted that. My iPad is still a great Facebook/porn machine but the bar for "great" in that regard is pretty low. I do think Apple has the tablet market on lock vs. Android just from an app ecosystem standpoint. As for the Galaxy versus another Android phone... I wanted something with a good, interesting physical design and consistent manufacturer support. Motorola used to be a contender but their recent phones do nothing for me. The official Nexus lineup is solid but void of any interesting design. Samsung has come a long way with TouchWiz since the S3 days (I had one in my AOL days and it was not great), plus it seems like I can more or less eschew TouchWiz with other apps if I so choose. This is all a big experiment. I have 14 days to return it. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 08-25-2016 DL Hangouts - Make it your default SMS/MMS app, this lets you combine Hangouts and SMS convos if you choose, and you can change what you are sending too, SMS or Hangouts DL all of the stock Google apps for everything else. Calendar, Gmail, etc. (Just Search google in the play store and DL all the things) In the Play store, Settings, un check "Add Icon to Home screen for new apps". This stops it automatically adding apps to your homescreen and they just show in your app drawer. Also turn on Auto Update over WIFI only. In the App drawer, you should be able to longpress and then choose Hide Apps to hide all the bloatware Samsung/Carriers put on your phone. You can also setup Folders (Like iOS) in your app drawer That should get your started. Hit me up if you want further assistance. Use Google Hangouts to manage SMS and your Gchat. Since there are alot of Android people among my friends we've convinced the Apple users to use it too so we can all be in the same chat and not MMS, also added benefit of still being able to video chat if you need. Google calendar to manage that, not the stock samsung one. EDIT: If i recall, you also had a google voice number. Hangouts can manage that too so you can text from it. Your cell provider number will show as a grey "SMS" and the hangouts will show as a blue "SMS" so it's pretty easy to differentiate. Nice reminder on keyboard, the Google Keyboard is fantastic. Also, hold the home button and Google will search your screen and bring up results right away. Kind of handy when someone mentions a restaurant or address to get directions real quick. Just spoke with Joey on this yesterday actually. Toni's Macbook air is crapping out so i went to look to replace it with Apple and.... just fuck no. The Macbook regular runs on M processors... for $1300???? Are people that fucking stupid? MBPro is not much better, i5 with a tiny SSD and "retina" for $1300? No gracias. Non-retina means then you get a larger drive... at 5400RPM for $1100. All of this, by the way, on Broadwell chips. From 2014. I get the point that their build quality is, subjectively, "better." But to sell blatantly old technology for just about the same price as when you released it two fucking years ago is outrageous. Read up on the Samsung Spin 7, reviews are fantastic with some even saying the trackpad is just about as good as MBPro (Seriously, those trackpads are magic.) Got a Skylake i5, 1TB HDD, 13in FHD screen, 8GB RAM. They designed it so that you can upgrade easily, so i bought a 256GB SSD for the OS. All said an done, $800. Sorry, but even if the build quality is better, it's not $500 better and still having lesser specs, better. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 08-25-2016 Yeah dunno what people are on about, our S7 and the Note 5 (before wifey dropped it) are awesome. I have used Swype for years and the standard messenging app and it's always been fine. You can uninstall and / or turn off a lot of the bloatware. There are tons of great apps based on whatever you need that are probably the same as they would be on the Apple universe (Waze, Uber, TripIt, Torque, Weatherbug is a good one, MS Office apps, Pandora, Maps is really really good). If the bloatware bothers you that bad you can also root your phone, which you don't have the option to do with Apple Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - CaptainHenreh - 08-25-2016 Ken Wrote:All said an done, $800. Sorry, but even if the build quality is better, it's not $500 better and still having lesser specs, better. I mean, this has always been my problem with Macs. Best I can say is that the hardware is more tightly coupled to the software which is always nice and should, in theory, result in better security and reliability. In practice, it's as secure and reliable as any BSD deployment, which is to say "pretty good but nothing special." When you pay extra for a Mac you pay for the style and the prestige, not for any objective benefit. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - SlimKlim - 08-25-2016 I'd pay the premium for a Mac just because I like to use them. I don't even leave the house with my computer so it has nothing to do with style and prestige. We're actually in the market for a new couch surfing / resume blasting laptop. There is an old school computer repair place in my neighborhood selling refurbed 2013ish MB Pros for like $550 and PC ones from like $300 and up. Might go check out what he has soon. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 08-25-2016 Jake Wrote:SamsungThe only thing I can say is from our previous discussion I learned that only a few manufacturers do a good job making OS updates available and Samsung isn't one of them. For SMS one of the few apps I even bother with (and I have to be very picky with my current phone with no freaking space available) is Textra. It's relatively light and actually works. I don't think it's screwed up anything else! AMAZING! SlimKlim Wrote:We're actually in the market for a new couch surfing / resume blasting laptop.Try a Chromebook? Ours is perfect for that, I never ever never have to mess with it and they're like $200 new. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 08-25-2016 +1 on the Chromebook. I bought Rachael an Asus one and for like $170 or whatever it was it is amazing Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - SlimKlim - 08-25-2016 BLINGMW Wrote:Jake Wrote:SamsungThe only thing I can say is from our previous discussion I learned that only a few manufacturers do a good job making OS updates available and Samsung isn't one of them. I'd prefer a full-featured computer, something powerful enough to at least run Photoshop moderately well if I ever want to pick up any freelance projects. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - BLINGMW - 08-25-2016 SlimKlim Wrote:...something powerful enough to at least run Photoshop moderately well... ok so maybe your idea of couch surfing and mine differ! Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - SlimKlim - 08-25-2016 Yeah I oversimplified what I was looking for. I have an iPad + keyboard cover that is great just for casual surfing. But I have another inevitable "job transition" on my horizon, and I'm going to need something more modern than my 2009ish Dell laptop from college to use for job hunting and whatnot. Well, there's the different OS and stuff. Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - ViPER1313 - 08-25-2016 If lightweight / ultra book class is not a requirement, the Lenovo Ideapad Y700 is great from a tech-spec perspective, has a 5+ hour battery and has worked great for me. |
