Mmph. I'm liking this a lot better than the Euro 1-series hatch and the current 1 series. Whenever a M2 drops I might have to give it a serious look, assuming they cut a good amount of weight out of it.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - .RJ - 05-16-2013

I dont get it... is it just a 3-series coupe?

Re: New BMW 2 Series - *insertusernamehere* - 05-16-2013

I would have preferred they brought the hatch to America. And why do the keep adding new numbers?? Just keep calling it the 1. Its only slightly bigger :dunno:

Re: New BMW 2 Series - SlimKlim - 05-16-2013

Americans don't get hatchbacks because we don't buy em, Audi is pulling the A3 hatch this year. I agree the nomenclature is stupid but the concept behind it is odd numbers are sedans and even numbers are coupes, convertibles or "gran coupes" AKA, sedans that aren't as practical as sedans but have a swoopy roofline.

.RJ Wrote:I dont get it... is it just a 3-series coupe?

Its much smaller than the 3-series, closer to the 1-series we have today, which also happens to be pretty close to the E36 in size. Theoretically they'll offer the 1-series as a small sedan to compete with the new Audi A3 and the 2-series as the coupe and convertible version. Although a year or so ago they were bullshitting about offering a FWD 3 or 4 cylinder under the 1-series name, dunno where that went.

If they offer an M135i as a small RWD sedan with a manual gearbox I will nerd the fuck out. I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to afford a brand new bimmer, but if its even a remote possibility when they come out I'll seriously consider (dream about) it.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - JustinG - 05-16-2013

They add more numbers so idiots don't realize they are paying for the same car as last year, with just a different number.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - CaptainHenreh - 05-16-2013

Well.

That's fuckin' stupid.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - SlimKlim - 05-16-2013

Who gives a shit what they call it. Just from its specs and size it's the 3-series that should have come after the E46. Better late than never. I'd drive it if it was called the BMW 24-series BabyJesusButtPlug XiDrives2.0is

JustinG Wrote:They add more numbers so idiots don't realize they are paying for the same car as last year, with just a different number.

Also that. Here's my analysis of what happened in the BMW Product Planning Department:

circa-2006: "Hey did you guys see Audi's press release for the A5? Do those dipshits really think people are going to pay $10k more for an A4 with 2 less doors?"

circa-2010: "Hey.... so remember when Audi thought consumers are stupid enough to pay $10k more for a car if you give it a different name? They are. Lets take the 3-series coupe, call it a 4-series, change nothing else and tack another 25% onto the MSRP and cash in on these dumbasses"

Re: New BMW 2 Series - Evan - 05-16-2013

isnt bmw switching to:
even numbers= two doors
odd numbers= 4 doors

thus easier to justify their additional assrape fee for coupes.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - D_Eclipse9916 - 05-16-2013

And I just started to like the 1 series styling (needs mods to look good though). I dont like this new one, but maybe itll grow on me?

I think you'll start seeing BMW differentiate the coupe and sedan of the 3 series a little bit more going forward so it's partly product that's driving the change, mostly marketing. I think they'll start making the 4-series more aggressive in styling and performance. They're already doing that with the 6 series (albeit somewhat unsuccessfully IMO).

The biggest name change I hate is that the 2 numbers behind the model no longer match the displacement.

They never reliably have. *cough*323*cough*325e*cough*335*coughcough*

Re: New BMW 2 Series - G.Irish - 05-16-2013

In the E36 to E46 days it was mostly on point. With the E90 all hell broke loose.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - *insertusernamehere* - 05-16-2013

BMW is slowly starting to no longer appeal to me with the newer cars. 2003 and before was their prime, for me.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - ispoonwithmugen - 05-16-2013

I like it :dunno:

Re: New BMW 2 Series - nismosam - 05-23-2013

I'm with Garrett, I like it. Better than the 1 series anyway, the 1 series looks entirely to feminine IMO. Plus if an M2 ever came out that would be awesome, but an M2 would essentially be competing with an M3..

Re: New BMW 2 Series - *insertusernamehere* - 05-28-2013

So this is sort of fitting with the topic of this thread, new bemmers and stuff:

Box I: Made me weep on the inside a little bit ...................... a lot a bit. I prefer BMW being N/A
Box II: I sure hope the people able to afford these things don't mind using their left foot.
Box III: Yaaaaaayyyyy Big Grin

Oh yeah, this is in reference to the new M4. Picture taken out of some issue of Motor Trend. I'm actually looking forward to this, however, it just makes the M2 seem even more pointless imo. Who wants an M2 when you can buy an M4? :dunno:

It even sounds nicer to say.

Re: New BMW 2 Series - D_Eclipse9916 - 05-28-2013

You read the fine print on box 2? "If there is a market for them". As good DCT/PDK/DSG transmissions come down in price and acceptance, we are going to see them a lot more.

New 991 GT3 is no longer available with a manual...... Driving my mom's SMGed E46 m3, I hate it around town, but thats because it is harsh and the computer gets confused. Wehn I drive the thing hard in the mountains? I love it. Its 90% as enjoyable as the manual, and much faster and more intuitive.

I am not sure if something will ever replace the sound of a perfectly executed blip-downshift of a manual bavarian 6, american v8, or italian 8s/12s. However, it may be the same as the glorious sound of a 4-barrel 442, or a set of webers on a beautifully tuned motor. (and those are gone!)

Because a M2 would be lighter, nimbler, and cheaper. The 3/4 series is a pretty big and heavy car these days. I was thinking about picking up an E90 M3 but it weighs 3600 lbs. :vomit:

If an M2 could come in at under 3200, that'd be acceptable. Preferably around 3000 lbs but I don't know if that's possibly with the platform they've got and M division's current philosophy. If they made a M2 lightweight though...

You have it backwards.
Around town for transportation I want to be lazy and have something shift for me.
In the mountains I want to row my own.

Meh. I'd still prefer the M4, but that's just me. If i'm gonna get a car that small i'd rather it be a hatch.
