Where do you have luck selling junk? eBay is pointless. - BLINGMW - 01-20-2015

I used to use eBay more often years ago, had almost all good experiences as a seller and buyer. Now I'm trying to unload some old computer stuff, I do everything you're supposed to do, and then someone with good feedback wins... and they don't pay. Don't respond, nothing. This has happened 3 times now, and I'm only trying to sell two things!
And eBay customer support... well they don't even have an email anymore, it's just a pre-scripted help tree. And as I'm finding out, when someone doesn't pay, there's no method of giving them negative feedback or anything, they just go on and you get to start over again.

Craigslist works pretty well for larger things that are worth selling and negotiating over, but for small stuff I find responding to multiple people and their "offers", and exposing my location as not worth doing. So for selling common things with a pretty well established value on the market that are shippable, what do you guys recommend? These other auction sites pale in comparison for traffic:

Or do I just stick with eBay but only do buy-it-now?

yeah speaking as a guy who has boxes and boxes of stuff i need to sell, there just isnt any good option.

Id say craigslist but I agree, anything under $50 isnt worth my time. Hell, even selling brand new still in the box stuff for 50% or less of market price can be challenging on craigslist. I also meet people in the grocery store parking lot down the road so not to ahve to give out my address or have them in my house.

ebay buy it now with free shipping is how i occasionally sell some stuff, but I hate shipping crap not to mention all the time it takes to take pics, make listings, pack stuff in boxes etc etc so if im going to do it i clump everything together and do all my auctions at once for economy of scale

Craigslist.

Relist, relist, relist. Only use e-mail. Don't meet people anywhere other than at home or ask for a deposit in line with the value of your time/effort.

I've had good luck selling random spare parts as an Amazon 3rd Party seller. There are no hoops to jump through and they take a cut similar to ebay. Things like old video cards, spare fridge water filters, spare handle to our old microwave, and a four year old Android tablet have sold for decent money. I always undercut the lowest prices, which is usually still more than what I expect to get from CL.

I usually put things I don't think will sell of CL on CL and Amazon 3P. The nice thing about 3P is it's permanently listed, so it's mindless after three minutes of work (and I always have pics from my CL post). They also handle payment and collect shipping fees (that they set), so I often never interact directly with the buyer.

Would also be nice if craigslist wouldn't do that ghosting crap without telling you. I've had that happen a handful of times and each time it raises my floor of what I consider being worth selling.

Apoc Wrote:Amazon...
Thanks for the recommendation I've never tried selling there but should

Craigslist seems to be working for the Trans Am.

i won't deal with ebay due to their seller policies. they will F your protection as a seller over for the sake of the buyer by any means necessary.

craigslist has been fine for me. i am the opposite of Mike though, i will not meet at my house but usually a crowded parking lot like a local grocery store. i don't want random weirdos to know where i live or what's in my house.

Re: Where do you have luck selling junk? eBay is pointless. - Mike - 01-21-2015

scott, i don't let anyone in my house. what they see from the front door they could see from any number of windows. 0 effort for me to get up from the couch on the odd chance that somebody does actually show up.

no, i get that anyone can look at my house, and yeah i figured you probably don't invite them in for obvious reasons.

i just don't want to purposefully direct random people to where my house is located if i don't have to. sometimes if its worth enough i'll price stuff a couple bucks higher to offset my time driving to a location.

this is also coming from the angle that i sell something once maybe every 5 or 6 months. if i did this kind of thing often it might be worth it to just say F it, come to my house.

Re: Where do you have luck selling junk? eBay is pointless. - Evan - 01-21-2015

yeah Im with scotty.

And ive never had a no-show once location and time has been set.

usually the flakes identify themselves pretty quickly with "hey let me know if youll take [40% of your asking price] hit me back"

Channing not sure if you are on FB, but I know a couple of friends who use "XyZ Community Yard Sale" Facebook group/page to peddle small items easily as most people that are on that page live close by.

btw- Subsitute "XYZ" for your area/Community where you live. Wink

this is a logic that is shared by many, but not me. is your place in a secret location? what does knowing your address have to do with anything? i'm sure thieves drive by my house all the time. what does having an e-mail conversation and sending the address in writing change? :dunno:

Re: Where do you have luck selling junk? eBay is pointless. - Apoc - 01-21-2015

As much as it pains me to say, I'm in Mike's camp. I have no patience to load my shit in my car and wait for them to show up. As is, I can sit on my ass and wait for them to ring my doorbell. I always have something listed and have sold 50+ things over the 3 years with no issues.

That sad, they never take more than one-step in the door, unless it's furniture... and we keep pepper spray within reach. I also require they text me, so it's partially more traceable should something happen.

i see your side of it and hope it keeps working for you. but for me, meeting 0.3 miles outside my neighborhood at store just isn't enough of an inconvenience to outweigh my non interest in having someone possibly checking out my house. its not that i'm paranoid, or have a special house, or anything really nice. its just easy enough for me to avoid that i don't see a reason not to.

i'm on a pretty quiet side street and up a steep hill. i wouldn't call it Scotty's Magical Invisible Fortress of Solitude but its not the kind of place that's easy to peek around at if you're just driving by. i like that.

anyway. here's another story of ebay rear-ending a seller over a $1,000 transaction with basically no recourse. seller got lucky though.

Re: Where do you have luck selling junk? eBay is pointless. - WRXtranceformed - 01-22-2015

I have sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist and most of it has been furniture. Without a truck I don't have any way to meet people somewhere so they come over here. I try to vett people out before I bring them into my home. I am probably more nuts about home security & defense than a lot of you (especially after someone broke into our garage last year) but I don't feel as uncomfortable when I have a dialog with someone before inviting them into the house. I also carry a gun on me when people arrive so I'm usually not that worried about being on the defensive. I can definitely appreciate both sides of the fence, I guess I still try to see the best in people as much as I can, with a healthy amount of caution and preparedness when we do meet.

Remember back in the day when people put their address in the newspaper for yard sales? I see it the same way.

(BTW, craigslisting a yard sale is a great way to unload a ton of crap.)

BUT HOW DID WE SURVIVE WITHOUT THE INTERNET

Re: Where do you have luck selling junk? eBay is pointless. - Mike - 01-22-2015

i also have a gun in close proximity when craigslisters come around Smile question that i could probably google faster - is it a concealed weapon if i'm inside my home and it's on me?
