The engine is cool technology that's been in japan for a few years now. I doubt the MS6 will be anything to really write home about. That engine in a 3, on the other hand.
Hopefully we'll see more GDI engines in the near future.

We most certainly will. I think some of the next gen Civics are going to have direct injection.
As for the MS6, I don't really see what's the point. We've talked about this before but really they should've put that engine in the 3.

no center diff...interesting. i like the car and respect the engineering that's gone into it, but i agree with others in that this engine/tranny combo should have gone in a smaller platform....it's too heavy and weak to compete with the rally spinoffs and too low-rent to compete with the RL and S4. but, mazda has been known to find niches in the market before....who knows.

I thought the car had the crappy haldex center diff used by Volvo? For performance... it sux, wont load up the rear wheels until the front wheels start slipping.
Edit: just read the article - weird, maybe its a permanent locked split?

I would look at the tech of the car before jumping to say it has "no center diff"
Car and Driver has been known to gloss over the details and make not-too-accurate generalizations.
By the description, it sounds to me like a similar system to the new RL.
While the computer may determine the torque split, it doesnt say how the torque split will be affected under a wheelslip condition. It is probably a safe assumption that it will in fact compensate torque away from slipping wheels. (otherwise you are throwing away some of the advantage of a computer controlled system)
"delivering up to 50 percent of the engine's power to the rear wheels contingent on variables such as wheelspin, yaw, and steering angle"
seems to imply that also.
too bad the computer is no-doubt programmed just for saftey
regardless, the Legacy GT is a far superior vehicle for $2k less. Nice try mazda. That Mazdaspeed badge is turning out to be underwhelming.

Exactly. The MS Protege was an excellent car but I've been a bit disappointed with the MS Miata and now the 6. The MS Miata should've had a lot more power, especially considering what the Flyin' Miata kits put out and the 6 is competing with cars that make it look bad for the price.

Amen. Subaru's more docile products get eclipsed in favor of the STi. I don't understand it, but I intend to take advantage of it, someday.

i love the wrx and think it'd be a grand daily driver, but i couldn't live with knowing there is an even better version of it (the sti). quite a predicacocolous.

For me it would have been nice to own a Type-R but it just didn't fit the plan or the budget at the time so I bought a GS-R and was more than happy with it. Honestly if I were in the market for an AWD daily driver I'd probably buy a WRX v vagon over an STi since the wagon is much cheaper and more useful.
