Toe (tow) vehicles - Feersty - 02-06-2006
Just thinking about this because it is going to become of importance to people or already has. Do you need a V8? Do you need 4WD? Can a V6 Ranger pull a trailer? discuss

You need a truck to handle what you're towing. If its a kart or a formula vee, then you dont need anything more than a station wagon.
That said, trucks and body-on-frame (think crown vic, etc) make the best tow rigs and you want to tow safely under the rated towing capacity. A v6 ranger would work pretty well for a small car and aluminum trailer - I think they're rated at 6,000 lbs. For towing you'll need brakes, tranny cooler, and brake conroller - most tow packages have all of these things upgraded standard, and usually cooling and charging systems too. Tow capacity on my F150 is almost 9k lbs, and I should be towing around 4k + whatever's in the bed.
And if you didnt already know, diesel is more better by a long shot. More torque, better mileage, run forever, etc - but the initial cost is significantly higher. Since I wont be driving my truck every day and towing a light load its not worth it.

Hey does anyone know where I can get one of those small trailers thatll tow tires. I see a lot of people with miatas have them? what kind of price range am I looking at.

B00bies has one, but said it was like a ridiculous amount to register it, like $100. I think total it comes to around $500 for the whole shabang and a permanent trailer tag.

But alot less torque, wheelbase and weight, tiny tires, and a unibody. All of those things are going to make it tow poorly - HP is really only a small part of the equation here, if at all and a average size trailer will really want to push a small tow vehicle around. My truck has "only 260" hp.

horsepower means just about 0 for towing.

FWD tow vehicle is a bad plan. I have seen many a esploded automagic transmission due to this. Just get a 2wd v8 pickup to make towin fun and easy. Thats gonna be ur cheapest way to go. An old late 80s early 90s F-150, 1500 Chevy, or a 1500 Ram would work great. 250 is always nice but stay away from older ford powerstrokes, 5-speed or auto. In those years the older turbo diesel trucks from Chevy and Dodge had automatic transmission problems, but the 5-speeds were strong. All that said a simple 1500...maybe with towing group from the factory is all that is needed.
