10% ethanol gas - lyltoy - 07-26-2006

anybody ever had a problem with using the gas with 10% ethanol in it? I haven't had any problems before this, but i dont usually use exxon and now my truck is missing and hesitating real bad Cry hopefully it was just a bad batch or something. just curious to what everyone else's experience with it has been. thanks.

The ethenol really only took place of the MBTL additive that was there before... nothing has really change though. Most fuel comes from regional distributers, so the gas station is less of a cause of a problem, rather the regional source hub.

only put it in the Accord, no problems

I wouldnt run it in anything with a turbo or more than 8.5:1 compression ratio. Just my .02

Why Interweb rumors, of course Wink

As far as I know, all gas on the market in the US is 10% ethenol based on the new EPA standards that went into effect March 1, 2006.

I mean, ethanol has a higher "octane" rating with a lower specific energy output. If the overall blend has a specific octane rating, I'm not sure what the difference is?

Ethanol is better in a turbo car.
There are a couple WRX guys using E85 (105 octane) very effectively with tuning.

My truck can use E85 and Id fill up all the time if the only public station in the area were'nt 30 minutes away.

every station i've been to in the past couple months has been 10%... can you get regular stuff anymore?

- mrbaggio - 07-27-2006

It seems to run fine in my WRX. I don't notice a difference.

oh. shows how much I've been paying attention. I guess none of our cars have had problems with it then. D'oh! Tongue

+1, custom tune and all.

FWIW, some cars are more sensitive than others when there's a little water in the fuel. My first Fiero ran like crap on gas from this one local gas station, and during a project I did in hike-school, I actually found that the water content of the fuel from that station was higher than any others I tested. To this day I still don't go there. Might be the problem you're having since it's obviously not the ethanol. Fill up somewhere else and think twice before going back to that station.

- HAULN-SS - 07-27-2006

All the gas stations around here that have ethanol blends have lower octane ratings posted. Even running "premium" ethanol gas in my SS causes it to knock and click like a mother fucker.

- Mike - 07-27-2006

weird, my s2000 runs perfectly fine and it has UBER high compression.

- HAULN-SS - 07-27-2006

Not mine - it's between 9.5 and 10. It runs fairly decent, minus a bit of clicking, but the real bitch is when you go to shut it off. Turn the key off, and you start getting all kinds of detonation, sputtering, knocking, etc. Then finally shuts off, if you're lucky. Sometimes I have to restart it again, and gun it right as I cut it off to flood it a bit so it'll choke out. I accidentally put it in there one day, and it sucked until I got that tank of gas out. Do s2000 have aluminum heads? If your car has aluminum heads, you can have less detonation at higher CR.

- Mike - 07-27-2006

11:1 c/r, aluminum head.

- HAULN-SS - 07-27-2006

there's your difference, same for you wrx guys i'd imagine
