Cracked rotor? - HAULN-SS - 06-21-2007
Hey - It looks like one of my rear rotors is cracked..or at least deeply scored..I don't know that I could tell the difference...but anyway..should that be covered under warranty? Wonder what could make that happen on a street car with factory pads/rotors?

Its probably not scored, just a heat mark from setting the parking brake with hot rotors/pads. Either way, rotors/pads are consumables and not warranty items.

brakes are wear items so they typically aren't covered... that said, a crack isn't from wear, but a defect... is it just a stress crack or is there actually physical space in between the two sides? if it's just stress and it's still pretty much solid, don't worry about it.

yeah, i can't see the gap, but it's definately not scoring, because it's going perpindicular to the rotation. I'd say it's still pretty much solid.
Just on a related note..I feel like I'm probably going to have to put new pads on it already in the near future. 19,500 miles, and things have gotten pretty sloppy feeling..nowhere near the bite they had when new.

Run a fingernail across it and see if you can feel anything (scoring, etc) on the rotor.
New rotors/pads/fluid, even OEM stuff, will tighten the brakes up.

if they're not worn out, don't replace them. maybe flush your fluid?

Will do, at lunch or something. Might check the others out too..I just noticed it on the rear drivers side, havent checked anything else out yet. It was pretty glaring from a distance walking up to the car.

i assume you're talking about the legacy since its only got <20k miles. check your manual. subaru wear items for 3 yrs, 36k miles were covered under warranty for my STi. i was so close to wearing those brakes out, so i put the suby on track at like 34k miles. i took it to brown subaru in cville here that next week and had new front pads, new front rotors and new rear pads all for free. i dont know if its different for legacy's or not, but i cant imagine it would be. also the rear e-brake on the STi use brake shoes on drums on the inside of the hat of the disc. also, not sure if the legacy is the same way, but a possibility.

What did you tell them? Assuming that's the case..do I just tell them they feel worn? Or do I need to have some kind of proof that somethings not right?

The rotors have to be worn past the service limit, or else they will see no reason to replace them.

well obviously if somethings not right, they'll replace it if the car's under warranty. in my case, the front pads were worn down to the metal wear indicators. they replaced my rotors because of "hot spots" on the rotor. the rear pads were also worn down to the wear tabs as well.

Wear Item Limited Warranty
Wear item coverage is 3 year or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Items covered are brake pad/shoe linings, clutch linings, and wiper blades.
