5-Lug - Chris - 08-17-2004

so just wondering whats the performance value of having 5 lugs? I understand why a heavy vehicle like a truck needs more, but why on something like the AARRR?

oh thats right... a 5th lug on each wheel will stall the R thieves an extra 30 seconds.

Performance value huh? Well, my guess is that by stealing the 5-lugs off of an R (thank you Honda for making it 5-lug valuable and not 4-lug bland) you could then sell 'em and buy more yellow performance parts for the rice-mobile of the week. So, no, I don't really know. Strength I guess. My truck has 5-lugs, the WRX has 5-lugs, but the Golf only has 4...

** edited for speeling...

I'm not sure what the deal is either.

The hubs and wheel bearings are the same, so there's no advantage there... the brake setup is bigger though.

i remember thinking about this a while ago when i started seeing a craze in the 5-lug conversion.

The only performance advantage i can see with a 5-lug is that the load of car and the stress that is brought to wheel studs is spread out through more surface, thus reducing the opportunity for the wheel studs to break.

Same goes with the wider distance (114.5mm vs 100mm) putting less stress on the studs. (exception of the single lug high performance cars since their one HUGE lug is in the center of rotation)

It's pretty obvious in the heavy duty Trucks and heavy load bearing vans and trucks. The only advantage i can see with the R and other imports like it is that they might have anticipated more extreme driving conditions for those specific cars. Although 4 lugs could have provided similar support, the 5-lug almost guarantees that the studs will hold up without a problem assuming no heavy performance modifications.

With 5-lugs you can probably add stronger/bigger brakes (heavier), bigger wheels (heavier), and allow for a more aggressive approach to driving without the threat of breaking the studs.

ok good answer. That probably makes sense on most performance vehicles. I just wonder if there is a benefit (or reason) on something like a family sedan (camry, accord, taurus).

i'm assuming it's just the weight/load, since the majority of them aren't that light and they tend to carry more people and more stuff

I believe the main reason for the conversion is that it will allow you to upgrade the brakes and rotors to be larger as well as it'll relieve more stress on the studs.

My protege had 5 lug.... no idea why... my next door neighbor's dog had bigger pickup than that POS.

i think the protege's have 5-lugs due to the really high offset of the wheels. I know Ryan's MSP has an offset of +55. Mabe with that high of an offset it has to have 5-lugs? Other than that i would have no clue.

wheel selection maybe? I know a lot of fox body owners do a 5-lug conversion because it gives them more options for larger wheels.

yes, but why do manufacturers go with 5-lug instead of 4?

lol, did you read all of the above Tongue

- Evan - 08-17-2004

at a prosolo, pat griffith (in his 4 lug se-4) lost one lugnut, and the whole wheel then completely came off. If you have more lugs to start with, this is less likely to happen in the case of 1 lug failing.

As far as the aRRR goes, the car needed bigger brakes than the dinky integra rotors, and the bigger Legend rotors were sitting there in the parts bin, so Im willing to bet it was a matter of cost.

i was bringing chad up to speed on the thread. we were not asking why people swap from 4 to 5 lug, it's quite obvious. rather, why do manufacturers make some cars 5-lug and others 4?

- bluhayz - 08-17-2004

I was of the impression that most newer cars today were all 5-lug whereas if you get an older car they're more likely to be 4....

- white_2kgt - 08-17-2004

my bad, I thought you were talking about why the type Arrr had 5 lug and the non Arr had 4 lug. I never can follow ricer talk...

we were. not "why people swap to 5-lug" because we know they generally do it for larger brake options or wheels options.

what i believe the manufacturer was basing their decision for 5-lugs for the aaR as a stock production car.

:?:
There are many many more 4x100 wheels than any other type of aftermarket wheel.
