Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - G.Irish - 03-22-2011

I saw this on Autoblog and I must say that I am well and truly intrigued. I have an Akrapovic exhaust on my bike, but a carbon fiber tipped exhaust on my car would make me beyond happy.

Thoughts? Would you go CF if you had the option? D\oes someone else already offer this? I've gotta think this would go perfect on a car with black wheels.

Flat black paint has the same effect Smile But seriously just for the cost of carbon fiber parts I see my money spent better elsewhere. I know they made exhaust cutout covers to put on the bumper out of CF for the DSM and wanted like $150 for em. Looks cool but $150 can be spent better else where.

So it's just a CF cover? Ricer.

This appeals to me 0%.

With the Akrapovic exhausts for bikes the carbon fiber exterior costs the same as the regular aluminum exterior. So I'd assume the same rule would apply. If it was significantly more expensive I'd agree that the money would be better spent elsewhere.

I would rock carbon fiber exhaust but that is the inner ricer in me!

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - Kaan - 03-23-2011

in a car, the exhaust weight is low ... i dont know if it would "help." but like Chris said, it looks like a wrap. I think i'd rather have black/heated titanium/regular metal.

on the bike... the CF set ups usually are mated to the titanium pipe. and loosing lbs on a bike anywhere is "helpful."

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - G.Irish - 03-23-2011

From what little I've seen the Akrapovic exhausts for cars do drop a good amount of weight. I just took a look through their twitter feed and the exhaust they're making for the X6M weighs 23Kg less than stock.

I'd imagine for the average car you're not going to see anywhere near that amount of weight savings but if it's anything over 20 lbs I'd say that's decent. Then again, easy to make something significantly lighter when you use titanium. Only problem is it'll be stupid expensive.

But anyway, I think the question of whether they're going to offer CF exhausts for street cars has been answered: http://www.bimmerboost.com/content.php?1003-Akrapovic-releases-their-titanium-evolution-exhaust-system-for-the-E71-X6-M

Only question now is which cars they'll make applications for

Whats with Inconel exhausts? Most of the hypercars now seem to have them standard or as an option.

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - BLINGMW - 03-23-2011

call me when it's actually all carbon fiber, not a cover

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - Evan - 03-23-2011

looks like its also very thick carbon, so I doubt the weight savings is substantial. carbon is light because it is very strong and you can make it thin.

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - Kaan - 03-23-2011

the link says... titanium exhaust with carbon tips Wink

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - Apoc - 03-23-2011

So I think we all agree that exhaust tips are ricer. The rules shouldn't be different because the material changed. Big Grin

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - Kaan - 03-23-2011

lol... Akra's motorbike signature is carbon fiber mufflers on bikes. they had to add that to their car exhaust.

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - Evan - 03-23-2011

well it does look good Tongue

certainly better than those garish titanium tips that are deliberately discolored

I think this should fall under a Rice Exemption Exception.

Then again, if these get popular it'll only be a matter of time before faux cf exhaust tips start showing up at Pep Boys.

Re: Sexy time: Carbon Fiber Exhausts for Cars? - Kaan - 03-23-2011

i bet they already have CF tips. Wink
