Sacrilege on a Biblical Scale: Mid-Engined 911 RSR

So now if Porsche has finally acquiesced to the reality that the 911 would be faster if it were mid-engined, will they take the next step and actually change the street car? Before this car I would've thought, 'no way in hell' but after this, and the rumor that the 960 (mid-engine flat-8 quad turbo Ferrari Fighter) is cancelled, I'm not so sure.

I feel like if the 911 went MR and they lost the rear seats that there'd be many Porschephiles howling in protest, then putting down a deposit at their dealer. Personally I would buy a GT3 either way, but if it goes MR all the better. I wouldn't be getting back seats either way.

the 911 as we know it had a hell of a run. i knew as soon as they started to truly develop the cayman that they'd have to address some major conflicts within their product line sooner or later...physics can only be bent so far. the back seat was always for show anyway...put the engine in the right place and let the 911 be king of the Porsche sports cars again. cayman gets the flat 4's, 911 gets the flat 6's, the supercars get the 8-10-12 cylinder stuff.

thing is, if i ever buy a 911 i'll always want the one i grew up with. for the next generation though, the 911 can be MR and it will probably have the same effect to them.

Yeah Porsche says that there are no plans to change the layout of the 911 but now that they've done it for racing, I have to think that it has moved from a 0% possibility to maybe a 25% possibility. At some point I think Porsche is going to be forced to change in order to keep up with the joneses.

Meanwhile, the last rear-engined Porsches will be instant classics.

912's are going for nearly $50k these days. I think it's fair to say anything even remotely like a 911 will be a collectors item. Truth is, people really stopped caring about "integrity" when they accepted the Cayenne.

I still find it amazing that they could out engineer physics for so long. With all that time back in their hands, could we one day see a German car with out dumb electrical problems?

i think the aircooled ones are truly going to become unobtanium now to your average enthusiast, as more and more go to collectors and "investor" snobs.

If I sold it, I don't think I'd ever be able to afford to replace it. Ready for a mindfuck? Mine's actually an outlaw 911 - it's a 912 with a 911S engine, and bastardized parts from all over the lineup. It's still probably worth $40k+.... and I bought it for $16k.

If I were you I'd sell it for $40k and buy something non-Porsche not currently experiencing a crazy ass price bubble. I mean, I love driving them but objectively they aren't the best cars with that notchy ass transmission and tendency to murder you if you lift at the wrong time. Even if you peeled off 10k to kickstart the kid's college fund there are a hell of a lot of fun weekend cars out there for 30k. :dunno:

I don't think it's a bubble and I don't really need the money. My dad grew up around Porsches, as did I, so I'd like my kid to do the same. I'm not really interested in maximizing my $/fun ratio and I can just buy a "fun" daily driver like a GTI.

My weekends are spent in a 328 wagon.

From what I understand, the logic for them doing this wasn't for better balance, but to be able to put that gigantic diffuser on it and improve the aero.

I getcha. After we lost our 914 in 2007ish I tried to push my dad into buying a 911T for like $17k or something. Lol. Fuck.

If the tradition of GTD/GTLM cars tech feeding into the production versions continue, I think it'll be hard not to see a mid engine 911 for the next gen.
