Any recomendations on jackets?

Hey, I was just wondering what jackets you guys were using and what you thought of them/any other suggestions you have for me. Ive been looking arround for a few weeks now at gear that I want to buy, and I have everything picked out except a jacket. Im going to go to a few store or two in the next few days and try on everything ive decided on thus far, along with a lot of jackets, but I wouldnt mind suggestions of things to look out for. Anyway, TIA.

Oh, and ive checked out sites like motorcyclegearreview.com and sites like that, and I just cant really decide (although im sure once I try some stuff on it will help).

I wear an armored mesh jacket. the brand is fieldsheer. i really like it and it was an awesome price for like $120. i believe it is the fieldsheer mach 3 jacket. look it up.

for protection on slides, leather is the way to go, but for crashes where you just get slammed, i'd stick with mesh. its also a lot cooler and comfortable.

i'll just go out there and say anything leather. It may be heavier and hotter, but it's worth it IMO. You can't feel the heat if your riding with a good jacket.

i bought a new enough A* mesh jacket and i didn't feel comfortable after coming from my Teknic Leather Lightning Jacket. I returned this jacket. Best thing is to go to the store and try a bunch of them. Different jackets have different fitment as well. (example - Teknic 42 is a tad smaller in the chest than a Joe Rocket or A* 42). look for shoulder protection, elbow, breathability, back padding or pockets for additional back padding.

i think my next jacket will be one of the Joe Rocket perforated honda replica leather jackets.

edit: try them on at the store, but check online before you buy. I bought my Teknic Lightning leather jacket for $110 shipped and it came with everything i wanted except for back padding, but it has a pocket that i can put an aftermarket or Teknic back protector inside.

I have both an A* leather jacket and a Joe Rocket Mesh - both have CE armor in them and are pretty good construction. I dont like the zippers, buttons, etc on the A*, they feel cheap - and my zipper is busted and its back at A* being repaired now. The stuff on the JR jacket is pretty solid, and I did go down in it and it protected me great but it needs to be replaced now. You can crash several times in the leather and have it repaired if you need to, its much more durable. I've looked at the JR leather jackets and tried them on - they fit pretty good and have good construction - that will probably be my next one if I dont keep the A*. I'm leaning towards getting something with a full zipper to use with leather track pants.

IMO, mesh/textile is just fine for the street, and so are jeans. Just know what you are getting into and that it has armor.

Feersty, which A* do you have?

I went to the store today and tried stuff on. I liked the A* tz-1 a lot, along with the A* spinner, although the latter didnt seem to have as much protection.

The TZ-1 seems to have better "hardware" than the spinner, but the spinner is more comfortable and has the reflective shizzle across the back and arms - this is a big bonus for street gear when riding at night.

Yeah about the only thing I liked more about the spinner (besides the looks) was how comfortable it was (it felt great). Would the spinner be adequate enough in terms of safety?

I went down in that one too (anyone notice a trend here?) although at much slower speed and it barely got scuffed up. Any good construction leather jacket with CE armor will protect you just fine.

Not sure the name but you can stop by Springfield anytime and take a look and try it on most importantly.

i remember trying it on before. if i had a blue bike or a neutral color i'd consider it, it's pretty sturdy.

I am gonna recommend the Joe Rocket Alter Ego textile jacket. I like JR's cheaper stuff, but I would probably not buy one of their leathers...

The Alter Ego is a true 4-season jacket, and it'll pretty much do whatever you want, aside from trackdays. It's got cool padding, storm-trooper style, and is super-versatile - it has a little backpack inside the back, and snaps all over the arms to tighten them up for better performance in the wind. I crashed mine and I am still using it - the only ill effect was a slight tear somewhere on the back.

I also own an ICON Pursuit perf'd leather (on eBay as we speak because I never wore it), and a Dainese 80s jacket that I just got.

If you want to spend big money on a leather jacket, Dainese, Vanson, or A* are the only brands I'd even entertain buying.

I'm picking up two new jackets in the next couple of weeks. I'm going to go with ICON for this set... a mesh and a throw back leather.

when you go to see what fits, just make sure the zippers are good ones... that if you are in mesh that the armor doesnt move around while its on you... and with the leather you want to make sure there is some kind of option to open pockets/vents to help you breath if you get caught out in it and it gets HOT. there is nothing worse than riding on a day thats too hot with a leather on... you dont want to get light headed on two wheels.
