I went to cycle sport on Rt 1 to pick up my battery early saturday morning... and there is an LE getting dragged in on the back of a wrecker.... the owner... an apparent squid... still making payments on it... parked it nose first... DOWN HILL... put the stand down and walked away.
the entire left side is jacked up... and yes that side touched the curb 
to quote the sales guy: "I knew we shouldnt have sold that bike to him..." I really thought the sales guy was going to cry when it pulled in.

parking... one thing i need to figure out... any pointers? obviously i know how i want the bike to sit, but something it just seems impossible. should i just park elsewhere in those cases and walk further?

That's like asking a fellow climber "there's no way I can do that route, should I try it anyway and fall possibly breaking bones, or should I just try another route that may take longer to get to the top."

i like to park where it's easily seen by people (...wait for the bling-haters to silence...) because when people see it, it's generally safer and will not be hit by cars or sat on/messed with. If it's not level ground or solid ground (ie: grass/soil after rain) i definitely will not park it there. If i can i'll park it on a sidewalk in a section where people generally don't walk - obviously not taking a path to the parking spot that has a high traffic of pedestrians.

NO its not technically legal... but they almost never say anything about it. when we went to frontpage the first time the parked 4 bikes on the side walk in front of two cops in the resturant ... they didnt say a word. if you try that in Old Town Alexandria... you will get in trouble.

I think parking on sidewalks are like solo drivers using the HOV... what makes you more special than anyone else? The fact that you drive a motorcycle? Big deal.

yes... its considered the "pimp" thing to do when you show up to a "resturant" on ladies night and why not, you'll always know the bike is still there... and you dont have to "fit" inbetween some cars and always wonder if they know how to pull out of a parking space without knocking your shit over.

Not even remotely the same. Why take up a whole parking space for something that doesn't even take up 1/3 the space? Not to mention the fact that a motorcycle is a lot easier to steal than a car.

that's my thinking as well. most of my friends always get irritated when a motorcycle takes up an entire parking spot and they can't find one - when they can take up a small area close to the entrance that's not being used for anything. it's an advantage of having a motorcycle and as long as it doesn't impede anyone i don't see the problem...

Need a better example? How about my neighbor at the old place who used to park in the firelane? Or the same guy who used to park his car on the lawn? How is he any different than any of us?
People get pissed in cars when an entire space is taken by a motorcycle? Tell them to grow the fuck up, you could have parked a car there instead and it wouldn't have been an issue. Inform them that you're helping decrease traffic in the area by not taking up more road with your car. Motorcycles should get special parking but it's not up to us to break the law to take it.
I've come out of a store and had another bike sharing my spot when we could have taken two. That's how it should be.

Well yeah but how often do you go to the store when there's another bike there with you? When I make a quick jaunt to Target or Barnes and Noble or wherever I'm almost always the only bike. Sometimes I'll park inbetween the handicap lane but sometimes I park on the sidewalk. Who is that inconveniencing? Three 300 pounders walking three-wide down the sidewalk?

what if the amount of space or design for space for pedestrians is not efficient and there is unused sections of the sidewalk or parking lot that are not being used by pedestrians, cars, or cleaning crews or anything of the sort...why not use that space for parking a bike? I see no problem with this (edit: it's not just about being "special" because we have a sport bike, it's also saving space and maximizing parking efficiency. A car is significantly larger than a motorcycle and sport bikes tent to be the smaller of motorcycles when compared to touring and cruise bikes)

i feel this statement is somewhat contradictory...so you're saying on the road it takes up less room than a car and in a parking lot it takes up the same room as a car?

basically you can't win...they're mad because a bike takes up a full parking spot for a car....they're mad because the bike parks in a convienient spot to the entrance of whatever yet doesn't take up a parking spot. those who stereotype in that mannor are ignorant and should "fuck-off".

It's not contradictory at all. The parking is no different than if you drove a car but you are saving space on the roads. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Ok I see what you're saying. But a car is a different story because its A LOT bigger. And parking in the firelane is a safety hazard, I wouldn't park my bike there eitherl.
And I'm not saying block the sidewalk with bikes, that would obviously be a jerk thing to do. If I park on the sidewalk its usually fairly far out of the way on a large sidewalk no less (i.e. Frontpage).
