FYI for FIOS Customers
#1
Most of the DC area has seen a double in package speeds in recent months. If you try to order FIOS as a new customer, chances are the minimum package you're offered will be 10/2 whereas most of us started off (and are still on) on 5/2. If you're on 5/2, chances are you can get a free upgrade to 10/2 just by asking for it.

Call up customer service, say you want to check on what your current plan is and ask what your options for upgrade are. If they don't offer you the 10/2 for "no increase in monthly rate" then say your neighbor just got 10/2 for the same price you're paying for 5/2. At this point they should offer you the upgrade for free.

Verizon has basically doubled all the plans, so even if you had 10/2 before I think you can get 20/2 for no charge. You can check package availability on Verizon's website if you're curious.

I called at 5:30 pm today and am already seeing an increased level of porn and illegal file sharing.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Looks good but what does the "ping" speed indicate?

In simple terms, it's the speed a request takes to go round trip from you to the server. In an increasingly broadband world, this is were a lot of the gains are to be made. When I went from Comcast's 5 down to Verizon's 5, the web felt considerably faster because of 1/4 the latency.

Comcast here seems to be pretty decent:

I've heard a lot of complaints about Fios speed around here but haven't seen any proof of it being slower/faster than Comcast.

You might end up losing your awesome upload on accident. That would suck.

I would never get FIOS on the principle of the matter. I had so many issues with trying to get Verizon down in Harrisonburg (which eventually never happened) and canceling my DSL in Frederick that I will never use them again.[/img]

Yeah... forgoing a superior product at a cheaper price is definitely not worth sacrificing being able to stick it to them!
