Inappropriate Work Relationships

I was just curious if y'all experience this at your employer or not:

A quick org structure: CIO -> three directors -> each director's employees.

At my company the CIO blatantly favors two women. They recently began to dislike their Director (around the same time he started keeping employee metrics I'm told) so the CIO, to keep them happy, brought them out from under that director and they now report directly to him. Between the two of them he really favors one of them. This female in question is "on the fast track to management," per his words. She's indispensable, works 20 hours a week and the company couldn't survive without her. She's the youngest person on the IT staff at ~24.

I don't have a fucking clue what she does and have no proof of her accomplishing anything in three years. In fact, we recently had to buy software for her that, honestly, queried a database and made it into neat, sortable, tables and automatically generated forms based on the table structure. I'm sure most of you know how ridiculous it is to have to buy that when so many free language frameworks do it and how easy it is to simply do it yourself. Actually, the most I've seen either of these two women do in the last two weeks was watch a secretary stock our fridge with sodas.

I have videos of him flirting with her (I brought in my digital camera for a few months and would sit it on my desk and click record whenever he got near. I'm sitting on them until the day he does something enough to really piss me off, or until I quit and then I'll present them to HR on my last day - largely because I'm an asshole.

Now my boss, in an attempt to get in good with the CIO or in return for something I assume, is favoring her even though she doesn't work for him. Actually, I can forecast this - she's "Deputy PM" on a project (that's the favor), which means hours clocked in a PM role which means she can get her PMI. At which point she'll get promoted to a director sometime in the next year or two. Unfortunately, I'll be long gone and won't be able to burn the building down as an appropriate response.

The CIO is also known to walk up to their door, claw at it, and meow as if he were a lost kitten - I shit you not.

So, that said - any of y'all experience stuff like that? I tend to sum it up to people as "My CIO is metaphorically fucking most of his employees in an attempt to literally fuck one of them" but I have no idea if he's really trying to shag her. I mentioned on another board I was thinking of keeping a list of day-to-day shenanigans that go on in my office because the people around here are beyond ridiculous and 3 miles short of accomplishing legitimate work. I'm sure I could make a movie. While typing this I've done nothing but listen to the two of them giggle incessantly in their office.

I don't see much of that in my office, but my dept is all men and occupies the corner of 1 of our 7 stories. I'd liken our antics to be along the lines of a kindergarten classroom since we like to throw stuff at each other and are louder than the other depts on the floor. As for upper management shenanigans, we aren't particularly exposed to that area so I can't really say.

That said, if I was in your shoes I would totally be documenting all of that stuff, but you need to have it seperated, somehow, from work so that it will be impossible for anybody to find your documentation. Be prepared for somebody to say "shouldn't you have been working instead of all this documentation" as well as the ensuing shit-storm if/when you get ready to expose it (might be good to get a lawyer first?). I must say it takes balls to video the office, I would love to know how you explained that... :-)

personally, i don't think i'd have the ability to keep myself under control long enough to wait until my last day to turn that stuff over. you should make a really well thought out and properly edited documentary about it all just out of principal. some good footage from your camera...put some narration in there, maybe open with a little soliliquoy. then present it to HR during a lunch hour or something.

pretending to be a cat? humiliate or destroy that guy. nobody should have to work with unintelligent people but certifiably retarded is another thing entirely.

It is illegal to videotape as you have done, I would edit that out immediately.

When I interned at Hollister corporate HQ one of the IT guys did that and caught the people he intended being naughty after hours. He said something to his supervisor who replied: "You have not told me this and there is no video because if I found that out I would have to fire you immediately."

Yeah I believe the law is that you cannot record (audio) of someone without their knowledge if you are not party to the conversation. I don't know how it would work in a common area. Now you can take video without someone's knowledge, it just can't have an audio track.

Its not illegal to say you video taped and might have their voices... burden is on the other party to prove you actually do. if you'd like a place to keep said funny ass videos, if they really do exist... talk to someone Wink

BAH plays favorites all day long. you either have to have the right lip gloss as a man, or just be stacked as a woman... and you get everything handed to you. i just continually slam their work and laugh in my managers face when he comes up with BS reasons for thier poor performance but continual promotion.

I should have clarified these 'flirtings'.

They actually don't need the audio at all. It's more of his door time antics. Their door is right next to a corner so he'll stand around the corner and reach his stubby arms around (he's like 5'2") and flick the door open and stay hidden as if "OH NOS A GHOST OPENED THE DOOR".

He'll also go up to the door and take soo long to open it my motion-sensing software actually ignored it (we're talking 20 full seconds to turn a door knob) and then when it's fully turned he'll bull through the door to scare them.

One time when the door was opened he tried to duck and cover as much as possible into their office before popping up to surprise them.

I call that flirting. And you don't need any conversation to see what's happening.

Although I once contemplated putting a tape recorder in their office to see what the fuck they giggled about all day. Even bought it, but it was stolen out of my truck when it was broken into a year ago.

I don't particularly fear any legal repercussions and if they fired me they would only save me from writing a large check for tuition assistance (which is the only reason I haven't quit).

*note * it's not like I'm going to blackmail the guy. I'm going to do my time and leave. And as I leave I'm going to tell HR they need to act before someone files a sexual discrimination lawsuit because we all certainly could. And then they can choose how to handle it.

Ha does it surprise you really? In the 4 short years I've been in corporate America ™ I've seen more of that shit than I can count. I know for a FACT that some of my previous managers have fucked a number of their subordinates. Anyone here ever work or currently work for Enterprise?? Talk to any of their level 3 managers and they'll tell you how incestuous that company is. Same with NASCAR, my buddy is hanging out with this girl that says that EVERYONE hooks up with EVERYONE in that industry... she said it's sickening.

With that said, I dated an HR girl at a company I worked at previously... haha. I usually try not to shit where I eat but she was a cool girl and we managed to keep it hidden for my entire length of employment there. I never got any special favoritism but I definitely got the heads up on a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes.

I mean no offense to the ladies on this board but it's the honest truth. I've seen some of the hottest girls with gigantic fake boobs get promoted before people who are 10xs smarter and work 10xs harder in some cases. All it takes is a little flirting or sometimes taking it a lot further. And you better believe there are girls who will sleep their way to the top.
