I've never owned a laptop, always just used the one I got from work. I'll be losing that job next week, so I obviously have to hand it back to them. I have a workhorse of a desktop, which I use for video and image editing, but I also see the value in having a laptop. I would like to replace the one I'm losing, but I don't have a shit ton of money to spend (think <$500). I also consider myself a fairly avid traveler and I like to have something I can take with me for internet research and photo offload purposes. I'd like it to be light enough that I don't might carrying in a (backpacking) backpack, but I also don't want my primary screen to be a tiny little 8".
It's probably asking too much for one machine to be both every day use and a great traveler, but I'd really prefer it. Is anyone using the Eee as an every day light use machine or have people found something bigger is necessary? Is the limiting factor the specs or the size of the keyboard and screen? I wouldn't mind running Win7 x64 on it, recommendations for that?

I found a 10" netbook to be too small for everyday use... I was only getting use out of when I traveled. I have not tried 13", but have been rolling with 15" lately and find it small enough to travel well and large enough to be usable.

I have a 14" Dell D610 that I like a lot, but its way too heavy to be lugging around in a backpack. I think I'm with you on 10" being too small for everyday, but that ultrathin seems like a decent compromise.

my 15" is a macbook pro so it's pretty thin... i think anything 15" and under as long as it's thin will do you well. i found the build quality on my eee to not be the greatest... i'd likely go hp or dell if i went small again.

we got a compaq CQ10/HP mini110 netbook from verizon when we got our FIOS hooked up. we love it, have taken it with us on trips. Its a pretty basic netbook though, 16gb hard drive and 1gb of ram, but we use a 250gb mini hard drive to store movies and music on for when we are traveling. We leave it in the living room for general use. It is definately to small for daily, but to just watch movies when traveling or surf the internet its great. But then again thats all they are really good for anyway. Has built in wifi, 4 usb ports, and a mulitcard reader. Cant complain since we only paid $100 for it through the verizon promo. Only diff between the one we have and one you buy from HP for 300 or so is the hard drive size. Keyboard is a 97% size keyboard so still like using a regular keyboard. The build quality is nice, i dont feel like im going to break it like some other netbooks have felt like when i have played with them in the stores, mostly when flipping the screen open on some feels like im gonna rip it off, but not the compaq.
My 12" Dell Mini would be great if it had more memory and a better processor, and they cant be upgraded on the 12". I dont mind the small size, use it around the house all the time and its great for travel. I think HP & Acer has some small/slim netbooks out that would be worth a look.

my 13.3" hp dv3t is the perfect size IMO. anything smaller would be too small and if i wanted something for a small and web-enabled i'd go for something like an iPhone or a Nexus One.
I think a lot of people complain about netbooks because they want it to be a more powerful laptop. Well, netbooks dont usually have very powerful processors so of course its going to lack when you ask it to do a lot. That being said, if you only want to stay connected to the webz, read email and the occasional non-HD youtube video, its fine. I've got a Lenovo 10.1" which I'm pretty happy with. Of course I wish the screen was a little bigger but I much prefer having something small to have out while watching TV on the couch then have a command center that I need a backpack to carry around. Oh and I also hate touchpads.

My biggest issue with netbooks is the keyboard. My big hands are not friends with "85% of full size" keys. That said, one of my coworkers has an HP Mini 311. It's a 11.6" screen and very very usable for "real world" stuff based on screen resolution and keyboard size. As a plus (to me at least) they are easily Hackintosh-able, so theoretically I could run some programs that I use on my "real" computer, if anything was a proprietary format that needed to be opened on the go.
If you stay in the limits of the machine, they are great. I've been thinking about a 311 to use for notes and jank in school. Although, my 15" MacBook Pro isn't hugely unwieldy. A 13" MBP would be perfect for me but a netbook would work for many.

i can't speak for the x64 bit processors, but i don't have any real complaints. i have a 32-bit processor with 3GB and now i have windows 7. i had to d/l the hp drivers and have yet to test some of the other features with the upgrade, but i'm happy. It does what i need it to do (basic functionality) and the only small complaint is the fan noise. it seems that the fan is directly under the upper-right part of the keyboard and i feel they could've 'padded' it better for sound protection.
i have the 9-cell extended battery and its life isn't bad, but not as great as i thought it would be ~5/6 hours with moderate use. the power settings have a huge affect on this though and i usually like the computing to be fast. even when the screen isn't lit brightly, it still drains the power quicker.
a small complaint about the mouse-pad. it's not centered with the keyboard, but rather to the computer. often i find my right palm hitting the scroll or the touch pad and affecting my use. they should've designed it so that it's centered with the keyboard, but i think a lot of computers may have this issue.
great computer for the price and i like the white laptop option. unfortunately not having a backlit keyboard (not available with the dv3t) is actually more of a pain than i thought because i prefer to use it in less light.
overall i like this laptop a lot and am happy with my purchase (had for all i wanted for under $800).
Buy it RJ and tell me if it sucks.

Not certain Intel Atom processors, which a lot of cheap netbooks use.

IMO, I would stear clear of anything with an Atom processor and get something with a bit more processing power. There are plenty of cheap laptops for around the same price as a netbook but with a lot more processing power and better graphics chips.

what is the general consensus on Toshibas?
I bought a cheap Toshiba back in 2004, and I wasnt too impressed with it but it wasnt terrible. It has been reliable, but its also barely been used.
My issues with it were mainly ergonomics, build quality and keyboard layout.
